Interview Tips For Families

It’s time to meet with your first nanny candidate!

As you begin this process, we wanted to share our team’s best tips to make your interview process efficient and helpful as you determine the best fit for your family.

1. Introduce the nanny to your family. We've coordinated a video chat for you and the nanny to meet virtually. Take a few minutes to introduce yourselves and let the nanny meet your family. Be sure to take note of how the nanny interacts with your children. Is the nanny enthusiastic and engaged, or do they seem bored and uninterested? Some talking points could be A.) Your family values B.) An overview of your children and what makes them unique.

2. Ask open-ended questions. Use the questions we provided you with to get to know the candidate better. Avoid asking yes or no questions and ask questions that require a thoughtful answer, such as, “Tell me about a time...”

Feel free to pick and choose which questions are most important to you. Don't feel like you need to ask all of these! You can also save a few for an in-person meeting if the virtual interview goes well.

3. Avoid discussions pertaining to finances and benefits. If the candidate brings these types of questions up, then feel free to say that North State Nannies will be handling the

negotiations if everything goes well. Focus on getting to know the candidate and seeing if

they would be a match for your needs.

4. Follow up. Even if you aren’t ready to take the next step or make a decision, follow up with us so we know where you stand. Did the candidate say something that was off-putting? Did they lack enthusiasm and not ask any questions? It's helpful to receive specific feedback about why a candidate didn't work for your family so we can better tailor candidates to you. All feedback is kept confidential of course. Did you love a candidate and can't wait to take the next step? Great, then we'll help coordinate an in-person meeting where you can meet the candidate in your home and see how things shake out. If that goes well, then we strongly encourage you to set up a trial day or two to make sure there aren't any red flags before drafting an offer letter!

Are you unsure about a candidate? That's totally fine! Some candidates might seem nervous in an interview but they really shine when they have a chance to meet and interact with your children. Our suggestion would be to read through their reference transcripts and set up a trial day to see how things go. You never know how things might go!
